Work begins on WA $86m Roe Hwy-Kalamunda Rd interchange upgrade

Construction on the $86 million Roe Highway and Kalamunda Road interchange upgrade in Western Australia is now underway and the project is set to significantly improve safety on this stretch of road for the almost 60,000 motorists passing through it daily.

“It will improve traffic flow and speed up travel times, particularly for freight operators travelling on the Roe Highway, which is a key strategic route across Perth’s eastern suburbs.

“Of the almost 60,000 vehicles passing through this intersection each day 14 per cent are heavy vehicles, and the upgrade will make this route safer and easier to navigate,” Federal Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure Alan Tudge said.

This project is part of the Australian Government’s  $13.5 billion investment towards the delivery of road and rail infrastructure that will help bust congestion and deliver jobs across Western Australia.

“This project will address congestion and improve journey times through one of the last remaining signalised intersections on Roe Highway,” WA Minister for Transport and Planning Rita Saffioti said.

In addition to the Roe Highway and Kalamunda Road interchange upgrade, other road upgrades in Perth’s eastern suburbs are ramping up including the Northlink and New Lord Street projects which are nearing completion; the Reid Highway Dual Carriageway project that is already under construction; and fully-funded interchange at the Great Eastern Highway Bypass intersection which is currently in the project development stage.

“Together, these important road upgrades will also complement the METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook rail line, which will connect some of our fastest-growing suburbs with Perth and the rest of our rail network,” Ms Saffioti added.

The Roe Highway and Kalamunda Road interchange upgrade will include the construction of a grade-separated intersection, a new bridge as well as two roundabouts, and on and off ramps. A shared path with local links for cyclists and pedestrians will also be delivered on the eastern side of the highway and on Kalamunda Road.

Other works will include the delivery of new drainage, street lighting and other related works that will help complete the interchange upgrade.

“Replacing the current intersection, which is heavily congested and has a higher than average number of crashes, with a new, safer interchange will make a big difference for all those travelling along this road.

“The project will lower Roe Highway by approximately nine metres to pass beneath Kalamunda Road, minimising noise and visual intrusion for residents in the surrounding area,” Federal Member for Hasluck Ken Wyatt said.

Following the allocation of addition funding from the State Government, this project will be extending the shared path onto Berkshire Road to complete a missing link in the shared path network along Roe Highway.

Construction on the Roe Highway and Kalamunda Road interchange upgrade will ramp up over the coming months, and the project is due to be completed by early 2021.
