Construction on a new interchange at Roe Highway and Kalamunda Road in Western Australia is one step closer to beginning as the contract to design and build the project - valued at $51 million - has been awarded to Georgiou Group following a competitive tender process last year.
This $86 million project funded by the joint $2.3 billion investment from the Australian and Western Australian Governments - each contributing $1.6 billion and $750 million respectively.
“This interchange will bust congestion and improve traffic flow and freight efficiency on what is a strategic route across Perth’s eastern suburbs,” Federal Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure Alan Tudge said.
This project will include the construction of a new grade-separated intersection together with a new bridge, two roundabouts and on and off ramps. A shared path will also be built on the eastern side of Roe Highway and on Kalamunda Road, providing local connection to pedestrians and cyclists.
Other works will include new drainage, street lighting as well as supplementary works that will help completed the interchange.
“This project will address congestion and improve journey times through one of the last remaining signalised intersections on Roe Highway.
“The current intersection is a safety and congestion blackspot, and this upgrade will go a long way towards improving safety for residents in Kalamunda and the foothills of Perth,” Minister for Transport and Planning Rita Saffioti said.
Detailed design is now underway and construction works are expected to begin in late 2019. The new Roe Highway and Kalamunda Road interchange is due to be completed by early 2021.
