$15.4bn Torrens to Darlington Project continues to progress towards major construction

What's it about: The Project Assessment Report for the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project in South Australia was released and the community was invited to have their say. The report provides details on the extensive technical investigations, assessments and planning work that was carried out as well as the potential impacts and opportunities during project construction and operations. Plans have also been unveiled for an upgraded four-way intersection across South Road, including re-routing Raglan Avenue traffic north via a new road link that creates an upgraded four-way intersection with Edward Street.

Major works to begin on $164m Jervis Bay Road Intersection Project

What's it about: The beginning of construction to upgrade the Jervis Bay Road and Princes Highway intersection in New South Wales was announced. This project is being delivered as part of the $2.55 billion program of works on the Princes Highway - jointly funded by the Australian and New South Wales Governments. This project is delivering a grade-separated flyover-style intersection to provide an overpass across the Princes Highway, with roundabouts on each side of Jervis Bay Road built to provide safer and smoother connections. The Princes Highway will also be expanded to two lanes in each direction through this project.

Designs revealed for proposed for $520m Richmond Road upgrade

What's it about: Designs for the upgrade of Richmond Road between the M7 Motorway and Townson Road in Marsden Park, New South Wales was unveiled and community consultation was held. The planned upgrade on the 2.2-kilometre section of Richmond Road will help improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and boost safety for all road users. The project includes widening Richmond Road, building a new flyover bridge from the M7 Motorway Rooty Hill Road North off-ramp to Richmond Road northbound, replacing the bridge over Bells Creek, and new pedestrian crossings on Richmond Road at Alderton Drive and Townson Road.

Shortlisted builders announced for $5.75bn Logan & Gold Coast Faster Rail Project

What's it about: Shortlisted tenderers were announced for the three major work packages on the Logan & Gold Coast Faster Rail Project in Queensland. ActivUs and Active consortia have been shortlisted for the LGC Rail Package; the Bielby Holdings and JF Hull Holdings as well as BMD Constructions and Fulton Hogan Construction consortia have been shortlisted for the LGC Open Level Crossing Removal Package; and ADCO Construction, DT Infrastructure as well as the joint venture of Martinus and Degnan have been shortlisted for the Loganlea Station Relocation Project.

Several work contracts awarded for $14.2bn Borumba Pumped Hydro Project

What's it about: A number of work contracts have been awarded for the delivery of the Borumba Pumped Hydro Project in Queensland. The Water2Wire Joint Venture has been appointed as the project's Dam Designer Delivery Partner and will undertake engineering and design of the seven proposed dams. The AFRY-Aurecon Joint Venture was awarded the contract to undertake the front-end engineering design documentation focusing on the technical elements of the pumped hydro scheme itself as well as assist Queensland Hydro in the procurement of the PHES Delivery and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Delivery partners. Decmil has also been awarded the contract to design and build two temporary workers' camps near the project site.

Meanwhile, GeoDrill Australia alongside Tier 1 Drilling and SJ Drilling have all been awarded drilling contracts, and SYSTRA has been awarded the contract to carry out Underground Technical Services and Management services to support construction of the exploratory tunnels for the pumped hydro project.

Fulton Hogan wins contract to deliver $390m Mt Ousley Interchange

What's it about: Fulton Hoga was awarded the contract to design and build a new interchange that will replace the existing Princes Morotway and Mount Ousley Road intersection to improve road safety for the thousands of motorists passing through this route. This project includes the delivery of heavy vehicle only bypass lanes for southbound travel, two new heavy vehicel safety ramps, new commuter car park and separate incident response facility, upgraded to existing pedestrian bridges over the motorway, two new intersections and bridges over the motorway, improved pedestrian and cyclist connectivity, and noise walls at certain points along the route.

Major construction progress seen on Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3

What's it about: Mid last year, it was announced that Gold Coasters will begin seeing rail being installed in the centre of the Gold Coast Highway in Miami as part of the Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 project. This stage of the Gold Coast Light Rail development will install up to 28 kilometres of rail along the Stage 3 route, with about 14 kilometres expected to be in place by the end of 2024. The $1.2 billion project will also include upgrades and expansion of the existing depot and stabling facilities, new light rail and bus connections at Burleigh Heads and Miami as well as supporting works and improvements including signalised traffic intersections and upgrades, safer signalised pedestrian crossings and improved pedestrian and cycling facilities.

Major contract award for $2.8bn Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant to create local jobs

What's it about: The contract to design, build and operate thefirst stage of the Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant in Western Australia has been awarded to the Northern Water Partnership. This project is expected to create up to 1,300 jobs, including opportunities for Western Australian apprentices and trainees. About $950 million of the total contract value is anticipated to be spent on local contractors and subcontractors while up to $59 million will go to Aboriginal businesses. The $2.8 billion project will deliver Perth's next large-scale seawater desalination plant that will provide an initial 50 billion litres of climate-resilient drinking water. Stage 1 of the Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant is expected to be commissioned in 2028.

$700m new Rouse Hill Hospital a step closer to construction, supporting 1200 jobs

What's it about: Artist impressions of the new Rouse Hill Hospital have been unveiled to give the community a glimpse of what Western Sydney's first major adult hospital built in over 40 years will look like once completed. The $700 million project will deliver much-needed contemporary healthcare facilities that the growing North West community deserves. The new hospital will be one of the fist to adopt the New South Wales Government's full campus model that incorporates health worker accommodation and childcare services. Once the new Rouse Hill Hospital is up and running, it will bring vital healthcare services closer to communities around Rouse Hill, Tallawong, Schofields, The Ponds, North Kellyville, Riverstone and Marsden Park.

Works are full speed ahead on all six Suburban Rail Loop East stations

What's it about: In early 2024, it was announced that construction is underway on all six station sites for the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East development in Victoria. The station works will pave the way for tunnelling to commence in 2026. SRL East from Cheltanham to Box Hill is estimated to create 8,000 jobs during its construction, with about 10 per cent of all work hours to be undertaken by cadets, apprentices and trainees. SRL East is expected to be completed and operational by 2035.
