Designs for the upgrade on Richmond Road between the M7 Motorway and Townson Road in Marsden Park, New South Wales have been unveiled and community consultation is now underway.

The Australian Government announced in its recent Federal Budget an additional $260 million funding to match the $260 million commitment to the project by the State Government, ensuring that the upgrade is delivered.

Key features of the proposed upgrade include:

  • Widening Richmond Road between the M7 Motorway and Townson Road, adding an additional lane in each direction
  • Building a new flyover bridge from the M7 Motorway Rooty Hill Road North off-ramp to Richmond Road northbound to allow road users to bypass two sets of traffic lights, reducing congestion and queuing onto the motorway allowing uninterrupted flow of traffic
  • Replacing the bridge over Bells Creek with a new concrete bridge that will include a separated pedestrian and bike path and travel lanes
  • New staged pedestrian crossings on Richmond Road at Alderton Drive and Townson Road making it easier for pedestrians and bike riders to move safely in and around the area
  • Intersection upgrade along Richmond Road between the M7 Motorway and Townson Road

“The Australian Government is making critical investments in Western Sydney to cement its future as a hub for growth and a place of opportunity.

“Our funding for this vital part of a $1.9 billion commitment in the recent Federal Budget towards 14 new projects across Western Sydney,” Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said.

“Upgrading Richmond Road is vital to keeping our community in North West Sydney moving.

“This critical project, backed by both the NSW and Australian Government, will see improved traffic flow on this vital road,” NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car said.

Upgrading Richmond Road will provide direct benefits to the fast-growing communities between Richmond and Blacktown, including nearby suburbs such as Marsden Park, Berkshire Park, Colebee and Riverstone.

Richmond Road serves as a primary arterial road for those communities to access the M7 Motorway, making this route a vital connection to work, businesses and schools around Western Sydney.

The planned upgrade to this 2.2-kilometre section of Richmond Road will help improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and boost safety for all road users.

Early works on this project will commence in 2027. Meanwhile, feedback on the designs for the upgrade can be submitted until 5 July 2024.

“More than 89,000 vehicles a day use Richmond Road in this area making it a vital connector to jobs, schools and sport and a gateway to the North West Growth Area.

“The community relies on Richmond Road and addressing the stretch between Townson Road and the M7 will provide more lanes and a better connection from the motorway.

“The flyover bridge design we outline today will bypass two sets of traffic lights which will make a significant difference in time spent in traffic for this community and motorists in wider Western Sydney,” NSW Minister for Roads John Graham said.

“Around 89,000 vehicles travel through the Richmond Road and Rooty Hill Road North intersection every day.

“This $520 million commitment by both the Federal and State governments will be welcome news for residents – and it’s also crucial to attract businesses and grow local jobs,” Federal Member for Chifley Ed Husic said.
