The delivery of the new Midland Station as part of Western Australia’s METRONET development is a step closer as the project reaches new milestones.

Lodgement and approval of the project’s Development Approval (DA) application as well as the release of new designs pave the way for major construction to commence in mid-2023.

The new Midland Station is set to become a landmark for the region. It will feature a contemporary design that reflects the local Noongar culture and landscape, standing with an industrial backdrop of the Midland Railway Workshops.

“This new train station will be the centrepiece of a revitalised Midland, and the new designs showcase a modern, accessible, and visually appealing station that connects with local businesses, residential buildings, and essential community facilities.

“At the same time, we’re lodging the Development Application, and we intend to start construction works by the middle of the year.

“With works set to begin in the middle of this year, we will start to see these designs take shape and move one step closer to having this long-overdue station upgrade to better service Midland and the growing eastern corridor,” Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said.

Midland’s Noongar place name is Mandjanup (Marn-jarn-up), with the narrative of “the place where meetings take place for trade and exchange – an important meeting place”.

The station’s new location brings it closer to the Midland CBD and it will also provide better connectivity to Midland Gate Shopping Centre and Midland Health Campus.

Key features of the new Midland Station include:

  • Platforms servicing the urban and regional networks
  • A pedestrian overpass accessible to the public 24/7
  • 12-stand bus interchange
  • A multi-storey car park with more than 800 bays to replace the existing at-grade carpark
  • 1-kilometre of new shared path to extend the existing network
  • A kiosk
  • Bike shelters
  • Operations facilities

Public spaces around the northern and southern station entries are going to be linked to the bus interchange, kiosk and wider precinct.

This project will also link the Midland Line to the new Bellevue railcar depot and train assembly facility, with a possibility of extending the passenger rail to the future Bellevue Station.

“This is a real game changer for Midland – it’s a major step forward for our residential communities and for those doing business in Midland.

“It’ll mean much better access for the elderly and will greatly improve accessibility, especially to the Midland Hospital and related facilities.

“It’s an investment that will pay dividends well into the future,” Midland MLA Michelle Roberts said.

The contract to undertake works on the new Midland Station was awarded last year to the Midland Junction Alliance, which is comprised of McConnell Dowell Constructors Australia, Georgiou Group, Arcadis Australia Pacific and BG&E.

Major construction on the new Midland Station project is expected to be completed in 2025.

The new level crossing at Cale Street is set to open in early 2024 before the current Helena Street level crossing is permanently closed.
