Construction is now underway on the Ison Road Extension in Werribee, with crews now on site to carry out earthworks.

Decmil was appointed as the preferred contractor earlier this year and this project is being delivered on behalf of Wyndham City Council.

The Ison Road Extension project will deliver a 1.3-kilometre, 4-lane road between the new Ison Road Overpass – which is also under construction – and Geelong Road at the Werribee Main Road-Princes Freeway interchange.

A new walking and cycling path that connects to existing paths on Ferntree Drive in King’s Leigh Estate and Geelong Road will also be built, boosting local active transport opportunities in the area.

In addition, two bus bays will be constructed near the upgraded intersection to cater for future public transport routes in Wyndham’s west.

Once completed, the extended road will help enhance connectivity as well as improve safety and reduce congestion, particularly in central Werribee. The new link will also cater for more than 29,000 daily journeys by 2036 to help meet the area’s growing transport needs.

The $80 million Ison Road Extension project is jointly funded by the Victorian Government and Wyndham City Council, with $60 million from the State Government’s Growth Area Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) fund.

Drivers will be able to use the new link by the end of 2026.

Building on the benefits of the road extension, the Victorian and Australian Governments recently announced a joint investment for the Werribee Main Road – Princes Freeway Interchange Upgrade.

The interchange upgrade will deliver an improved Geelong bound exit ramp and city-bound entry ramp alongside a new lane to the Werribee Main Road bridge and added traffic lights at key intersections.

Planning is still ongoing on the interchange upgrade, and construction timelines will be revealed once the project progresses further.
