Works will soon get underway to deliver the Ison Road Extension project in Victoria, which will help relieve congestion in Werribee.

Decmil has been awarded the contract to deliver the 1.3-kilometre four-lane road between the Ison Road Overpass – which is already under construction – and the Geelong Road Princes Freeway interchange.

The Ison Road Extension is due to be completed in 2026 and it will ultimately cater for more than 29,000 journeys – helping meet Wyndham West’s growing transport needs.

The overall Ison Road Extension and Overpass development will provide a new link between Ison Road and the Princes Freeway in Werribee.

The nearby dangerous and congested level crossing at Galvin Road will be closed to traffic once the new connection opens.

In addition, walking and cycling paths to Geelong Road will be delivered as part of the Ison Road Extension and Overpass project to help boost local active transport.

“We are proudly delivering the missing link in Werribee – cutting congestion and getting families home safer and sooner. This vital link will be open to traffic in 2026, changing the way families Min Melbourne’s west can get around,” Premier Jacinta Allan said.

To date, crews have clocked in almost 150,000 hours building the Ison Road Overpass, including the road deck that was completed last year. Workers will now continue constructing the bridge and prepare the site for works to begin on the Ison Road Extension.

The Ison Road Extension is anticipated to create over 220 direct and 400 indirect jobs during its construction phase.

The $80 million project is jointly funded by the Victorian Government and Wyndham City Council. Approximately $60 million of this funding is from the State’s Government’s Growth Area Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) fund.

The Labor Government is committed to delivering for the west. The Ison Road Extension and Overpass as well as the $333.5 million Werribee Main Road – Princes Freeway Interchange Upgrade and the Ballan Road Intersection Upgrade are two upgrades that will collectively create 1,624 jobs.

These projects are in addition to the West Gate Tunnel Project, the Western Roads Upgrade and the Melton Line Upgrade. All these projects are part of a strong record of road and rail infrastructure investment.

These works all build on over half a billion dollars’ worth of upgrades for roads in Werribee and Wyndham Vale.
