East Brisbane is also set to benefit from a number of congestion-busting road upgrades, with a $33 million investment from the Australian Government. This is in addition to the $80 million invested towards road project in Brisbane’s north.
“Better roads get us all home faster. They make it easier to commute, easier to do business and easier to live in our cities.
“Getting stuck in traffic means you miss dinner with loved ones, or you can’t help the kids with homeworks, I want to give that time back to hardworking families,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison said.
This multi-million investment for East Brisbane is going to fund a number of projects including the $15 million towards upgrading three intersections at Panorama Drive and Wellington Street in Thornlands and Cleveland.
“...we will ensure safe access to the hospital via Weippin Street and provide a high quality north south arterial that directly connects Wellington Point down to Redland Bay,” Federal Member for Bowman Andrew Laming said.
The investment will also contribute $12 million towards the intersection upgrade at Newnham Road and Wecker Road in Mount Gravatt - one of the top five worst intersections in Queensland.
The remaining $6 million from the investment will be spent to provide safety improvements to the Rickert Road and Chelsea Road intersection in Ransome.
Like the funding for North Brisbane, this investment is also part of the $244 million package of works for South East Queensland through the $1 billion Urban Congestion Fund announced in the 2018-19 Budget.
“The Urban Congestion Fund will deliver a more reliable road network for commuters and freight, and support critical access to employment centres and freight hubs.
“This is as much about hitting those local traffic headaches as it is about the major highways and providing a safer journey home for motorists,” Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population Alan Tudge said.
