Construction has commenced on the $800 million Northern Gas Pipeline (NGP), which is expected to create up to 900 jobs. Once completed, teams for maintenance and operations will be based in both Tennant Creek and Mount Isa.

The 622-kilometre gas pipeline will run from Tennant Creek up to Mount Isa and will be connecting the Northern Territory to the eastern gas pipeline grid, which will be assisting with the expected gas shortage in the east coast in the future.

Last month, Jemena awarded McConnell Dowell with a construction contract to build the NGP and scope of works include engineering, construction and commissioning of a 481-kilometre section of the pipeline.

“The Territory Labor Government is developing Tennant Creek as a mining services centre – construction of the Northern Gas Pipeline will see increased opportunities for regional development through local involvement, as well as increased opportunities for businesses and for training and skills development,” NT Chief Minister Michael Gunner said.
