Acciona-Clough JV wins civil works contract for Rio Tinto's Koodaideri Project

The joint venture between Acciona and Clough has been awarded the contract to deliver civil works on the northern rail formation at Rio Tinto’s Koodaideri iron ore project in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.

The scope of works under this contract will include approximately 100 kilometres of rail formation earthworks as well as the delivery of culverts, bridge, access roads and level crossings.

Over 200 new jobs are expected to be created with the execution of this contract.

“We are excited with the opportunity to work with Rio Tinto Iron Ore to deliver its vision for the Koodaideri Project as we continue to grow our presence in Western Australia’s Iron Ore developments,” Clough CEO and Managing Director Peter Bennett said.

The Koodaideri Project is located about 110 kilometres from Newman and it will comprise of a processing plant and infrastructure; a 166-kilometre rail line connecting the mine to the existing Rio Tinto Pilbara rail network; an airport; support facilities; and accommodation for mine workers.

In November 2018, Rio Tinto has invested $3.5 billion for the development of the Koodaideri Project.

The entire project is anticipated to support up to 2,000 jobs during construction and a further 600 permanent positions during operations.

Once operational, the Koodaideri iron ore project will have a capacity of up to 43Mtpa, setting the new mine as Rio Tinto’s future major mining hub in the Pilbara.

Earlier this year, NRW Holdings was awarded the contract to deliver bulk earthworks and drainage works for the project.

Koodaideri is expected to be operational by 2021.
