NRW Holdings is set to deliver bulk earthworks at the Koodaideri iron ore project in Western Australia’s Pilbara region with a $65 million contract win from Rio Tinto.

NRW is set to undertake bulk earthworks as well as drainage works, with a peak of 175 people in the workforce.

The Koodaideri iron ore project is expected to be Rio Tinto’s new major Pilbara hub and the company has invested approximately $3.5 billion towards the development of the mine.

The development will comprise of a processing plant and infrastructure, including a 166-kilometre rail line that links the new mine to the existing Rio Tinto Pilbara network. The Koodaideri project will also include an airport, support facilities and accommodation for mine workers.

In a previous statement, Rio Tinto Chief Executive Jean-Sebastien Jacques said: “Koodaideri is a game-changer for Rio Tinto. It will be the most technologically advanced mine we have ever built and sets a new benchmark for the industry in terms of the adoption of automation and the use of data to enhance safety and productivity.”

Koodaideri is expected to be completed and operational in 2021, and it is estimated to have a capacity of up to 43Mtpa.

The project is anticipated to create up to 2,000 jobs during construction and a further 600 permanent jobs once it starts operating.

NRW has also recently been awarded a $57 million contract by Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) for the delivery of Stage One of the rail component of the Eliwana iron ore project. You can read more about it here.
