The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) has announced that works in and around the Wangaratta Station in Victoria will commence this month.
This Wangaratta Station Precinct project is being delivered as part of the Tottenham to Albury section of Inland Rail.
“It’s an exciting time for the project in Wangaratta.
“We will modernise the station precinct and make it a space the community can be proud of,” ARTC General Manager Victoria and South Australia – Ed Walker said.
Because there is not enough space under the two station footbridges or under the Green Street bridge for double-stacked freight trains, major works are needed to enable the safe passage of these freight trains on this section of the railway.
Works at Wangaratta will include:
The footbridge on Cusack Street is going to be removed first, with elements of its heritage and design to be incorporated into the new underpass.
Further vegetation clearing will be carried out to pave the way for the pedestrian underpass to be built.
Wangaratta Station will remain open to vehicles, pedestrians and commuters while construction progresses. Pedestrian access from Norton Street to Cusack Street will also be maintained across the Docker Street footbridge during this time.
On the other hand, detours will be established when the Green Street bridge is closed in early 2024.
ARTC is partnering with McConnell Dowell to deliver this Inland Rail project in Wangaratta.
We’ve listened to community and stakeholders during the design stages and heard their feedback on heritage, safety, accessibility, and connectivity has been incorporated into the Wangaratta project, along with the requirements of our heritage and environment approvals.
“We are working hard with our construction partner, McConnell Dowell to minimise the impact of works on the community,” Mr Walker said.
