Construction begins on M1 Pacific Motorway upgrade between Tuggerah and Doyalson

Works are progressing on the M1 Pacific Motorway between Tuggerah and Doyalson, with major construction to begin on 30th January on a third northbound lane.

According to Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities Paul Fletcher, more than 70,000 motorists use this section of the highway and they will benefit from the better traffic flow as well as improved road safety once the upgrade is completed.

“The project is one of three M1 Pacific Motorway Upgrades worth $391.6 million, jointly funded by the Australian and New South Wales governments to provide a better and more reliable M1,” Mr Fletcher said.

The upgrade between Tuggerah and Doyalson will include:

  • Widening a 12-kilometre section of the motorway to provide three lanes in each direction between Wyong Road at Tuggerah and the Doyalson Link Road
  • Rebuilding a nine-kilometre section of the motorway between Wyong River and the Doyalson interchange to improve road surface
  • Improving road drainage for safety during wet weather
  • Providing safety and capacity improvements to key motorway interchanges at Warnervale and Doyalson

New South Wales Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey said that upgrade works on the 12-kilometre section is progressing well.

“The upgrades will benefit all motorists by increasing traffic capacity along the motorway which means less congestion and better travel times for motorists, improved road safety and a smoother road surface.

“Work involves separating the two existing northbound lanes for 800 metres from around two kilometres north of the Tuggerah interchange to just after the Alison Road overpass. The full Tuggerah to Doyalson upgrade is expected to be completed in 2020, weather permitting,” Mrs Pavey said.

For the duration of the upgrade, no changes will be made to the southbound lanes and an 80km/h speed limit will be retained for the safety of workers and motorists.
