11 local road projects worth $65mil approved for Western Sydney

The Australian and NSW governments are unlocking the economic potential of Western Sydney with funding for 11 critical new local roads projects.

Minister for Major Projects Paul Fletcher said Round Two of the $200 million Western Sydney Local Roads Package will deliver transformative local infrastructure designed to boost the capacity and efficiency of the area.

“This package will create jobs and enhance the safety, efficiency and connectivity of the local roads network in Western Sydney, and will cut travel times for thousands of commuters,” Mr Fletcher said.

“It is a critical part of our two governments' $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan, and will ease congestion for drivers, meaning less time stuck in traffic.

“This package will provide $65 million for local infrastructure projects, which are expected to start after July this year, including major upgrades to existing roads and intersections, new traffic lights and additional amenities for cyclists and pedestrians.”

Funding has been approved for the following projects:

• $16.4 million—Smithfield Road Upgrade—Fairfield City Council
• $11.3 million—Erskine Park Road & Peppertree Drive Intersection Upgrade—Penrith City Council
• $7.5 million—Erskine Park Road & Bennett Road Upgrade—Penrith City Council
• $6.9 million—Erskine Park Road & Coonawarra Drive Intersection Upgrade—Penrith City Council
• $6.7 million—The Northern Road Intersections Upgrade—Penrith City Council
• $5.6 million—Camden Valley Way/Argyle St—Stage 2—Macarthur Road Intersection—Camden Council
• $4.1 million—Camden Valley Way/Argyle St—Grahams Hill Road & Richardson Rd Intersection—Camden Council
• $3.4 million—Erskine Park Road & Explorers Way Intersection Upgrade—Penrith City Council

Funding has also been allocated to three scoping and identification projects:

• $655,000—Raby Road from Eschol Park Drive to Stranraer Drive—Campbelltown City Council
• $526,000—Signalisation of Bungarribee Road and Flushcombe Road—Blacktown City Council
• $120,000—Porrende Street Upgrade—Camden Council

New South Wales Minister for Roads and Freight Duncan Gay said councils had been closely consulted to ensure the best possible outcomes for local communities.

“Continued investment in local infrastructure is vital to the economic prosperity of Western Sydney, which is Australia's third-largest economy,” Mr Gay said.

“Sound planning is essential if we are to deliver world-class infrastructure for this growing region, which will grow by one million people in the next 20 years.

“The Australian and NSW governments will continue to work closely to progress planning for the new Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek, which will be central to economic growth and the ongoing creation of jobs in our local communities.”

Construction work on the projects is expected to begin in July. So far $83 million has been spent as part of the Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan, announced in 2014, and funding is expected to exceed $200 million by the end of this financial year.
