VIC Upfield Line level crossings removal to begin in 2019

Monica Gameng   |   September 4, 2018

Works to remove the two dangerous and congested level crossings along the Upfield Line - at Bell Street in Coburg and Moreland Road in Brunswick, Victoria- are expected to commence next year, with the John Holland and Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR) joint venture delivering the project.

Currently, two possible designs have been identified following investigation works on the project. The two options are to elevate the rail line or to lower the rail line into an open trench at Bell Street and Moreland Road.

According to the Level Crossing Removal Authority: “These designs minimise disruption to the community, preserve the heritage listed stations and allow for the potential removal of other level crossings on the Upfield Line in the future.”

In addition to the proposed designs, community feedback will also be considered on the final designs for the removal of the level crossing at Bell Street and Moreland Road.

The final design for the level crossings is expected to be announced in late 2018, with boom gates at Bell Street and Moreland Road gone in 2020.
