Thiess has been awarded a $340 million contract extension by Glencore, extending the CIMIC Group company’s operations at the Mount Owen mine in New South Wales’ Hunter Valley by another 18 months starting July 2021.
“This award reflects Thiess’ long-term commitment to provide value-add solutions for its clients,” CIMIC Group Chief Executive Officer Juan Santamaria said.
Under this contract extension, Thiess will continue providing mining services at the Mount Owen operations. This includes mine planning, design and execution, drill and blast, overburden removal and coal mining services.
Thiess has been in operation at the Mount Owen mine since 1994.
“For more than 25 years we have delivered industry-leading, specialised mining techniques at Mt Owen, leading to higher resource recovery, increased plant efficiency and reliable material movement for our client.
“Our team looks forward to continuing our long association with Glencore and the Hunter Valley community,” Thiess Managing Director Douglas Thompson said.
The Mount Owen coal mine is located in the Upper Hunter Valley, about 25 kilometres northwest of Singleton and 26 kilometres southeast of Muswellbrook.
The mine is part of the Mount Owen/Glendell Operations – consisting of Mount Owen, Glendell and the previously mined Ravensworth East open cut coal mines – managed by Mount Owen Pty Ltd in behalf of Glencore and operated by Thiess.
The Mount Owen/Glendell Operations processes approximately 15Mtpa of run-of-mine (ROM) coal, with coal products such as high-quality export thermal and semi-soft coking coal mostly exported to South East Asia for power generation and stell production use.
