BHP has awarded CIMIC Group company Thiess a six-year contract extension for works at the Mount Arthur South Operations in New South Wales.
The $1.9 billion contract will enable Thiess to continue providing mining services at the mine, including operating and maintaining mining equipment that support production requirements as well as working with BHP and the local community for the planned mine closure.
“This contract extension acknowledges Thiess’ strong safety record and ongoing operational performance, and builds on the longstanding relationship between Thiess and BHP that started more than 30 years ago.
“We are strongly aligned with BHP in our commitment to diversity in our workforce, as demonstrated by our award winning MASITE program, which has resulted in significant increases in the number of our local Indigenous and female employees,” Thiess Group Executive Chair and CEO Michael Wright said.
“Thiess has played a key part in supporting the local economy and community of Hunter Valley region, dating back 80 years, and we are proud to be given the opportunity to continue our presence in the region alongside BHP,” Thiess Group Executive Australia East Rae O’Brien said.
The Mount Arthur coal mine is part of the New South Wales Energy Coal (NSWEC). It is an open-cut energy coal mine wholly owned by BHP.
The mine is located about five kilometres south of Muswellbrook in the Hunter Valley, adjacent to the traditional lands of the Wanaruah people.
Approximately 2,000 people, predominantly living in the region, are employed to work at the mine.
