Tenders opened for $500m Midland Highway safety upgrades

Tenders are now open for the delivery of the Epping Forest to Powranna section of the $500 million Midland Highway upgrade in Tasmania. The project is part of the Midland Highway 10 Year Action Plan.

The works package will include the construction of an 11-kilometre section of the Midland Highway south of Launceston. Once completed, the project will reduce injuries as well as save lives on the State’s key north-south road link.

“This section of the upgrade will improve safety along the approximately 11-kilometre section of road between Epping Forest and Powranna through road and shoulder widening and additional overtaking lanes in both directions.

“The safety improvements between Epping Forest and Powranna will complement works already underway at two projects on the northern end of the highway – the Symmons Plains to south of Perth upgrade, and the Perth to Breadalbane duplication,” Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said.

According to TAS Minister for Infrastructure Rene Hidding, local businesses have already benefitted directly from the upgrades and the local community is benefitting from the improved safety and travel efficiency on the completed section as well.

“We are building Tasmania’s future, and these vitally important projects will not only result in increased safety, but will also provide the infrastructure needed to support Tasmania’s growing economy,” Mr Hidding said.

Tenders for the Epping Forest to Powranna section of the Midland Highway upgrade project will close on 11 July 2017, with works expected to commence in late 2017 and completed by early 2019.
