Tenders called for old Royal Adelaide Hospital demolition works

Tenders are being called for the first demolition works package for the old Royal Adelaide Hospital. The demolition works on the old hospital building is expected to be the largest South Australia has ever seen, and it will be creating significant demand for the industry for approximately four years as well as supporting local jobs – including up to 600 construction jobs.

“The transformation of the old Royal Adelaide Hospital site into an openly accessible space for all South Australians will be one of the most significant projects shaping Adelaide’s East End into the future.

“We want to open up this site to the public and we want to be ready to start achieving that as soon as possible once the new Royal Adelaide Hospital opens in September,” Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan said.

Stage 1 of the project will include the demolition of the East Wing building, which is located adjacent the Adelaide Botanic Garden. Demolition and remediation for the entire project is estimated to have a combined cost of over $150 million.

Demolition will be done in phases, which is expected to take three to four years to complete. Heritage buildings on-site will be refurbished and retained.

“The demolition of these old and outdated buildings will be one of the biggest projects of its typer ever undertaken in South Australia and will present significant opportunities for local demolition and remediation contractors to gain work,” Mr Mullighan said.

Works are projected to commence later in 2017 once the transition of patients, staff and existing services to the new Royal Adelaide Hospital in the West End are completed.
