The tender for the Nicklin Way upgrade – between Main Drive and Waterview Street – in Queensland is now open for submissions, and construction companies are encouraged to submit their interests. This upgrade is part of the $22 million Sunshine Coast University Hospital access improvement package of works.

This upgrade project will boost the capacity of Nicklin Way, which will make travel easier for Sunshine Coast motorists, mainly those who are travelling to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said that the project will include upgrading the intersections at Main Drive, Production Avenue and Waterview Street.

“This upgrade is part of a program of works under the State Infrastructure Plan to improve access to the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

“The upgrade will improve intersection safety and efficiency as well as provide a quicker and more reliable journey for motorists travelling between Main Drive and Waterview Street,” Mr Bailey said.

The Minister added that the final design for this upgrade was aimed at delivering improved capacity and safety as well as cater to business owner expectations.

“We have listened to community feedback during the engagement period and finalised an outcome that will improve Nicklin Way while reducing the impacts on local on-street car parking,” Mr Bailey said.

The winning tenderer for the Nicklin Way upgrade is expected to be announced by mid-2018, with construction expected to commence in mid to late 2018.

Works on the Nicklin Way upgrade will include:

  • A third northbound lane from main Drive through to Waterview Street
  • A left-out turn lane from Production Avenue and Technology Drive to Kawana Way

Other upgrades that have been completed under the Sunshine Coast University Hospital access improvement package of works include four roundabouts on Kawana Way – at Jamaica Way, Kawana Island Boulevard, Premier Circuit and Metier Linkway – as well as additional lanes at Kawana Way Link Road and Kawana Way near Woodlands Boulevard.

“This program is supporting 43 local jobs – a great boost to the Sunshine Coast economy,” Mr Bailey said.

In addition to the Nicklin Way upgrade, $19 million worth of developer funded upgrades are underway between Beach Drive and Wurley Street. This includes an upgrade to the intersection at Lake Kawana Boulevard to accommodate the residential development at Bokarina Beach. This particular package of works are expected to be completed by the end of 2018, weather permitting.
