A start to work on replacing the old Arnot Creek bridge near Ingham on the Bruce Highway is being fast-tracked, with the call for tenders for the $10 million project released late last week.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the early call for tenders will enable construction to start in May 2016, weather permitting.
“The Australian Government will contribute up to $8 million to this project, providing an average of 31 jobs over its construction phase and helping to support the north Queensland economy,” Mr Truss said.
“The project is located around 12 kilometres north of Ingham and involves the replacement of an existing single-span deteriorated bridge with a new single-span concrete bridge at approximately the existing level.”
Queensland Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey said the new bridge will provide long-term savings, particularly in terms of reduced maintenance costs.
“The works will improve connectivity for the more than 2,500 vehicles, including 633 heavy vehicles, which use this section of the Bruce Highway every day,” Mr Bailey said.
“The new higher and wider bridge will also improve the highway's overall ability to remain open to traffic during all but the most severe floods.
“It is anticipated the successful tenderer will be announced in April 2016, with construction to begin as soon as possible after that. The current 80km/h speed limit over Arnot Creek Bridge will be removed once works are completed.”
The project is jointly funded with the Australian Government contributing $8 million and the Queensland Government $2 million.
