Tender phase of $2.6bn M6 Stage 1 project in NSW progresses

A new major milestone on New South Wales’ $2.6 billion M6 Stage 1 has been reached with the State Government about to call for tender applications to build the vital project that will deliver the ‘missing link’ to connect Sydney’s south to the wider Sydney motorway network and create approximately 5,300 new jobs. 

Following the Expressions of Interest called last year, three consortia have been invited to tender for the design and construction of this project. The shortlist includes: 

• Acciona-Samsung Joint Venture – comprised of Acciona Construction Australia Pty Ltd and Samsung C&T Corporation 
• Gamuda-BMD Joint Venture – comprised of Gamuda Berhad t/as Gamuda (Australia) branch and BMD Constructions Pty Ltd 
• CPB-Ghella Joint Venture – comprised of CPB Contractors Pty Ltd and Ghella Pty Ltd 

“We know many workers, contractors and sub-contractors are doing it tough during this challenging period, and the start of works on the M6 Stage 1 will be a major boost for the construction industry. 

“The construction of the M6 Stage 1 will create thousands of new jobs and support families across Sydney,” Minister for Roads Andrew Constance said. 

This project will enable motorists to bypass about 23 sets of traffic lights on the Princes Highway as well as remove up to 2,000 heavy vehicles off surface roads daily.

In addition, upgrades to recreational facilities – which are valued at $20 million – at popular local parks located at Rockdale and Brighton-Le-Sands will commence by mid this year. 

“We’ve now received final approval from Bayside Council to start work on upgrades to Ador Park and McCarthy Reserve at Rockdale and Brighton Memorial Playing Fields at Brighton-Le-Sands, which is great news for our community. 

“The new recreational facilities at Rockdale and Brighton-Le-Sands will include the creation of new grass and synthetic playing fields, amenities buildings, more car parking spaces, and a new skate park and play areas,” Mr Constance said. 

Work on the recreation facilities is expected to begin in mid-2020 and is due for completion by the end of 2021. 

The M6 Stage 1 project will deliver: 

• Twin four-kilometre tunnels linking the New M5 Motorway at Arncliffe to President Avenue at Kogarah 
• Ramps between the main motorway tunnel and the surface intersection at President Avenue 
• Tunnel stubs for a future connection south to extend the M6 
• A new intersection at President Avenue including the widening and raising of President Avenue at this location 
• New shared cycle and pedestrian pathways connecting Bestic Street, Brighton-Le-Sands 
• Motorway support infrastructure including tunnel ventilation systems and the motorway control centre 
• New service utilities including a permanent power supply line 
• Minor adjustments to local roads in the project area 

The entire M6 Stage 1 project is anticipated to open to traffic in late 2025.
