Planned improvements on the West Tamar Highway in Tasmania are being extended to include the northern section from Legana to Beauty Point.

The proposed works are part of the West Tamar Highway Corridor Strategy – Launceston to Beauty Point project, which aims to deliver a road network that provides improved safety and user experience as well as meet the future demands of the growing region.

“We are now extending our corridor planning to the entire West Tamar Highway to include the northern section from Legana to Beauty Point.

“The West Tamar Highway is an important road connecting the region’s community, industry, agriculture and visitors, to Launceston and the rest of the State.

“The benefit of this whole-of-corridor strategy is to provide an evidence-based, prioritised list of projects for future funding,” Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael Ferguson said.

Community consultation is now underway, and responses will help identify potential improvements to the Legana to Beauty Point section of the project.

Feedback collected from the community will be utilised to inform a corridor strategy that is being developed by the Tasmanian Government to identify and prioritise works along the entire length of the West Tamar Highway.

A road corridor study was recently completed for the southern section of the highway – between the Launceston CBD and Mcewans Road, north of Legana. The study has identified a list of priority projects, including duplicating the highway between Freshwater Point Drive and Acropolis Drive.

Concept designs for the highway duplication will be released for public comment later this year.

From 26 September to 24 October 2022, Tasmanians are invited to comment on the improvements they want to see along the full length of the West Tamar Highway.

Submission of feedback can be done through the interactive map on the Transport Services website or at information displays at West Tamar Highway Beaconsfield Council Chambers in Beaconsfield and at the Exeter Community Hub in Murray Street, Exeter.
