Seymour Whyte to deliver Stages 2 and 3 of NSW M4 Smart Motorway

Major construction works on Stage 2 and 3 of the M4 Smart Motorway in New South Wales is set to commence in July 2018, with preliminary works already underway. Seymour Whyte will be heading the delivery of these two stages.

“We’ll be introducing intelligent technology to Sydney’s roads, and motorists travelling on the M4 will experience a safer, more reliable journey once we’ve finished,” Seymour Whyte Regional Manager - South Steve Lambert said.

The two stages - valued at approximately $170 million - are part of the $470 million project that will upgrade a 35-kilometre stretch of the M4 Motorway between Lapstone and Mays Hill.

Works on Stage 2 - between Pitt Street, Mays Hill and Reservoir Road, Prospect - will include:

• Installation of variable message signs, traffic sensors, CCTV, and speed and lane use signs between Pitt Street and Cumberland Highway
• Realignment, extension and widening of ramps at Burnett Street, Coleman Street and Cumberland Highway, and installation of ramp meters and ramp control signs

Scope of works for Stage 3 - between Mulgoa Road, Penrith and Mamre Road, St Marys - will include:

• Realignment, extension and widening of ramps at Mamre Road interchange
• Installation of ramp meters and ramp control signs at The Northern Road, Kent Street and mamre Road

Both stages will also include installation of maintenance bays, vehicle detection loops, emergency phones and upgrades to power and communication infrastructure.

The last two stages of the project will upgrade the M4 Motorway between Russell Street, Lapstone and Mulgoa Road, Penrith and both stages are yet to be awarded to a contractor. The entire five-stage project is due to be completed in 2020.
