A new massive hybrid renewable energy project is set to be built in Burra in South Australia’s Mid North region. The project is being developed by Neoen Australia and it will comprise of a 1,200MW wind farm, a 600MW solar farm and about 900MW of battery storage.
The Goyder South Project is going to be delivered in three stages, with the first stage anticipated to begin construction this year.
Stage 1 will include the construction of about one third of the renewable energy hub and it is expected to cost approximately $1 billion.
Delivery of the second and third stages of the project will depend on the delivery of the proposed interconnector that will run between Robertstown in South Australia and Wagga Wagga in New South Wales.
“The $1.5 billion SA-NSW interconnector will provide a freeway for renewable energy from South Australia to the eastern seaboard, enabling huge renewables projects such as Goyder South to turn South Australia into an energy powerhouse.
“Neoen has indicated that the delivery of stage 2 and 3 of the project will be dependent on the construction of the SA-NSW interconnector,” Minister for Energy and Mining Dan van Holst Pellekaan said.
In addition to the Goyder South Project, four other large solar farms worth billions have also been proposed to be built along the SA-NSW interconnector’s route. Minister van Holst Pellekaan also said that the interconnector will help the State deliver its projected net-100 per cent renewables by the 2030s as well as help lower power prices and boost future growth for South Australians.
“Modelling released earlier this year shows that small and medium businesses with significant electricity consumption will save many thousands of dollars each year when the interconnector is energised.
“Significantly reduced electricity bills for small businesses will be good for jobs, investment and the local economy,” Minister van Holst Pellekaan said.
