Upgrades to the remote hospitals at Tom Price and Praburdoo in Western Australia are being fast tracked and tenders are now out to market, with the contract expected to be awarded in November of this year.
The release of tenders follows the announcement made last month that the State Government is partnering with Rio Tinto to fast track the redevelopment of the health facilities by bundling together the project to create a larger package of works.
Not only will the larger package of works be more attractive to contractors, but it will also help reduce time spent tendering for government and industry.
“These are significant infrastructure projects that will deliver modernised healthcare facilities for the people of the Pilbara.
“Staff at Tom Price and Paraburdoo Hospitals continue to deliver excellent care to the community, and I look forward to seeing the project progress,” Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said.
Once appointed, the Department of Finance will work with the successful head contractor to maximise opportunities for local subcontractors based in regional Western Australia.
The Tom Price Hospital project will include the design and construction of a new facility that features a modern emergency department, contemporary facilities for visiting services with private interview and consulting rooms, and a four-bed inpatient ward.
This project will be delivered through two distinct work packages, namely a forward works package that involves civil and structural works for the facility and a main works package focusing on the new hospital's construction.
The existing hospital will be demolished once all works are completed and services have been fully transitioned to the new Tom Price Hospital.
On the other hand, the Paraburdoo Hospital project will include the design and construction of a new fit-for-purpose facility at the existing hospital site. The final scope of the project will be informed through collaboration with key stakeholders.
Rio Tinto has invested a total of $40 million towards the Tom Price and Paraburdoo Hospitals, after an additional $20 million was contributed through the company’s investment in the Resources Community Investment Initiative (RCII).
The tender for the projects is available on Tenders WA, and it will close on 13 September 2024.
“The release of the tender for the redevelopment of Tom Price and Paraburdoo Hospitals is an important milestone for the local community.
“By bundling together these two projects the redevelopment will be fast-tracked and will create sustainable work for local contractors and businesses,” Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel said.
