Another major milestone has been reached on the $2.1 billion Sunbury Line Upgrade in Victoria, with a second package of works awarded to the Rail Infrastructure Alliance which is comprised of John Holland, CPB Contractors, AECOM and Metro Trains Melbourne.
“We are delighted to be working on this important project to make sure the Metro Tunnel reaches its full potential.
“Our work on this project will also help upskill the industry, as we create up to 30 full time positions for engineering cadets, trainees, apprentices and priority jobseekers and provide additional opportunities for social enterprises and local subcontractors,” John Holland CEO Joe Barr said.
This new contract award will get the Alliance to deliver major track and power upgrades that will support the new fleet of High Capacity Metro Trains (HCMTs) that will travel through Metro Tunnel.
Works under the $534 million Stage 2 project will include overhead electrification works between Sunbury and South Kensington and at South Yarra; signalling power upgrades; and delivery of additional infrastructure at Calder Park sidings - which is still subject to development plan approval.
“This is an important project for CPB Contractors. We look forward to bringing our rail experience gained from other projects being built by CPB Contractors,” CPB Contractors Managing Director Juan Santamaria said.
The Alliance will begin work under this contract next month with completion expected by 2023.
This new contract award is the second works package secured by the Alliance. The first contract was awarded in August of this year and will include platform extensions as well as track upgrades across the Sunbury Line. You can read more about it here.
“By building on the success of the Rail infrastructure Alliance's work on the tunnel portals and rail network upgrades, we are delighted that the Victorian Government has entrusted our team with the planning and design of the Sunbury Line Upgrade. We are privileged to be involved in iconic projects like the Melbourne Metro Tunnel, where we have the opportunity to create a positive legacy for the communities in which we all live,” AECOM Victoria, South Australian and Tasmania Regional Managing Director Mark McManamny said.
The Sunbury Line Upgrade will help maximise the benefits that the Metro Tunnel Project will deliver by allowing trains to run more frequently and accommodate more commuters. The entire upgrade will include:
