The New South Wales Government has signed a land lease agreement with WestWind Energy Pty Ltd that will help facilitate the development of the proposed Lake Victoria Wind Farm.
Crown Lands negotiated the agreement for a special purpose lease that provides WestWind Energy with an initial 25-year lease with two 7-year extension options.
With the agreement signed, WestWind Energy can progress planning for the proposed renewable energy project that will be located approximately 30 kilometres north-west of Wentworth, near the Victorian border.
The Lake Victoria Wind Farm is still subject to assessment as a State Significant Development once a development application is submitted.
“The Lake Victoria Wind Farm proposal has the potential to deliver major economic investment, well paid regional jobs and more green energy for NSW.
“The Lake Victoria Wind Farm is a significant clean energy initiative that can play a vital role in powering our economy for generations to come.
“The rental income will be reinvested into the Crown Reserves Improvement Fund to provide grants to maintain and improve Crown reserves across the State, such as regional showgrounds, war memorials and community sporting grounds,” Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper said.
This renewable energy project is estimated to have a capital expenditure of $3.8 billion, comprising of over 200 wind turbines with a total generation capacity of up to 1,000MW and an annual energy production of around 3,400GWh – enough to power around 700,000 homes.
The proposed development will also include about three battery energy storage systems with a total capacity of 1,500MWh to provide a more secure and consistent supply of electricity.
Lake Victoria Wind Farm is expected to support up to 375 jobs during its construction phase and around 70 ongoing jobs once operational.
WestWind Energy is aiming to begin construction on the wind farm in the next two to three years – from 2029 to 2032 – subject to planning approvals and community consultation.
