Planning starts for NSW Central Station revitalisation project

Central Station in New South Wales will soon be revitalised to make it at par with some of the grand stations around the world. According to Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance, planning has begun for the 110-year-old icon’s rejuvenation project.

“Central is the key gateway to Sydney and we want to unlock its potential.

“NSW deserves a premier station that everyone can be proud of, one that’s not just a place to pass through but a destination itself,” Minister Constance said.

Construction of a new light rail stop and new Sydney Metro platforms will soon begin. These provide a catalyst to consider upgrading the Central Station precinct.

Getting public feedback on ideas for Central Station’s interior and exterior revitalisation is the first step in the plan. An extensive consultation program for this project will also be created to engage with the industry.

“Today we’re kicking off consultation to revitalise Central and we want the public to come forward with ideas, and to think big.

“It’s pretty clear when you compare it to the grand stations of the world, Central is falling short of what it could be offering customers and visitors to Sydney at the moment,” Minister Constance said.

Minister Constance said that Central’s customers are asking for more retail and more space so that moving around the station will be easier. With the constant growth in the number of commuters passing through Central Station, space becomes an important factor for this interchange point.

“I want the station’s revitalisation to be about innovation, to accommodate the changing face of transport and new technology in this city, but in a way that respects and preserves Central’s heritage,” Minister Constance said.
