The $165 million Stephenson Avenue Extension project in Western Australia is progressing well with Phase 2 works now underway.
This stage of the project will extend Stephenson Avenue to Mitchell Freeway and Cedric Street, and works will include:
“The Morrison Government is getting on with delivering infrastructure projects that reduce congestion and improve safety for commuters across Australia, making it easier for them to move around our capital cities and ensuring they get home quickly and safely.
“We have committed $82.5 million for Phase 2 of the Stephenson Avenue project, which is one of the 180 packages of work that we’re delivering nationwide under the Urban Congestion Fund – one part of our record $110 billion infrastructure pipeline,” Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts Paul Fletcher MP said.
Once completed, motorists will be provided with a new connection from Cedric Street to Scarborough Beach Road, with a new grade separated Mitchell Freeway interchange with a southbound Smart Freeway on-ramp and new links to Ellen Stirling Boulevard.
Phase 2 works are being carried out by the S2M Evolution Alliance, comprising of Acciona, Clough and WSP.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti MLA said that there will be some disruptions to the local area once construction on the freeway and bus interchanges commence.
“The Stephenson Avenue Extension project is upgrading local roads, public transport and cycling and walking infrastructure.
“This will completely change the way local residents and visitors can access the area, while also opening up currently undeveloped land directly adjacent to the Stirling Train Station and the Mitchell Freeway,” Minister Saffioti said.
Phase 1 of the Stephenson Avenue Extension project extended the road from Scarborough Beach Road to Howe Street and delivered two new signalised intersections.
The first phase was delivered by the City of Stirling and works were completed in February 2022. This section of the project is now providing an alternative connection to Ellen Stirling Boulevard and Scarborough Beach Road via new roads at Howe Street and Oswald Street.
“The Australian Government understands the importance of having a reliable road network in WA, and the Stephenson Avenue Extension will ensure all road users will be able to get to their destination sooner and safer,” Federal Member for Stirling Vince Connelly MP said.
The $165 million Stephenson Avenue Extension is jointly funded by the Australian and Western Australian Governments, each contributing $82.5 million. The $90 million Stirling Bus Interchange upgrade is also jointly funded on a 50:50 basis.
The entire Stephenson Avenue Extension project is anticipated to support up to 800 jobs.
