Opportunities for local businesses on VIC's West Gate Tunnel Project

Big and small Victorian businesses that are interested in joining the team to build the West Gate Tunnel Project are urged to join information sessions to be held across the State.

The construction of two underground tunnels, bridges and other infrastructure will require more than 110,000 tonnes of steel, and 92 per cent of it will be Australian steel – prioritising Victorian businesses and workers.

“We want Victorian businesses to benefit from the extra jobs and skill created by the construction of the West Gate Tunnel Project.

“We’re building a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge that will slash congestion along our busiest road corridor – and we’re building it almost entirely from local materials and creating thousands of local jobs,” Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan said.

The entire project will be utilising 93 per cent local content, supporting thousands of jobs for the State – including design and construction, logistic, catering, nursery workers and landscapers as well as concrete and steel suppliers.

Social enterprises – which includes Aboriginal and local businesses – will also be given the opportunity to supply goods and services where it is possible.

“Thanks to our procurement policies, local workers and businesses will be the big winners from the West Gate Tunnel Project.

“This is a massive job-creating project and it’s never been a better time for local businesses to get involved as construction commences,” Minister for Industry and Employment Ben Carroll said.

The West Gate Tunnel Project is expected to create up to 6,000 new jobs.

Information sessions will begin this week in Melbourne before moving to other locations across the State, including Williamstown, Dandenong, Geelong, and across regional Victoria.

Businesses can register their interest at the West Gate Tunnel Project’s ICN Gateway page.

Construction is expected to commence in early 2018.
