NSW's $94 million Newell Highway upgrade reach major milestones

Federal funding worth $61.35 million has been approved to get the Newell Highway upgrade in New South Wales going, and tenders have also been called for the project.

The $94 million upgrade project will help improve safety along the vital transport link between Mungle Back Creek and Boggabilla – north of Moree – as well as reduce future maintenance costs and improve freight efficiency along the route.

“This project is one of many we are delivering under the Australian Government’s $75 billion infrastructure investment, which is improving regional connectivity, creating jobs, and saving lives on our roads,” Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said.

According to NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey, this upgrade plays a vital role in ensuring that the Newell Highway continues to operate at high capacity.

“The Australian and New South Wales government funding will ensure this route, which is particularly important for freight movements, is able to get motorists from A to B safely and quickly,” Mrs Pavey said.

The Newell Highway upgrade – between Mungle Back Creek and Boggabilla – will include:

  • A new road surface
  • Widening of the existing highway OR constructing a new two-lane highway adjacent to the existing highway
  • Construction of dedicated overtaking lanes
  • Upgrade works on intersections
  • Improving access to private property
  • Road delineation, sign posting and roadside furniture
  • Upgrade drainage to improve the Newell Highway flood immunity when feasible and reasonable

“The upgrade will also include a one-metre-wide centreline treatment to allow more room between vehicles, improving safety for all motorists travelling along this important section of road, which in the past has been the scene of some tragic accidents,” Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton said.
