NRW wins $176m contract for works at the South Flank project in WA

BHP has awarded another contract for works at the South Flank iron ore project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, following the approval of a $3.9 billion investment for the development.

The recent contract award is valued at $176 million for bulk earthworks and concrete works, and the contract was awarded to NRW Holdings.

Under the 15-month contract, NRW will be undertaking bulk earthworks and concrete works for the overland conveyors and crushers as well as ancillary works relating to non-process infrastructure at South Flank - which is located approximately 120 kilometres north west of Newman.

The scope of bulk earthworks will include access tracks, clearing, pads and diversion drains. On the other hand, concrete works and associated detailed earthworks will include the placement of up to 14,000 cubic metres of concrete.

“The award of this contract is particularly pleasing given the long standing association of NRW and BHP on resource projects and recognises NRW’s experience and capability in delivering projects in the Pilbara. The contract will also provide opportunities for employment and procurement for the area’s Traditional Owners and local businesses,” NRW CEO and Managing Director Jules Pemberton said.

For this project, up to 350 workers will be needed during peak construction. NRW will also be utilising internally sourced plant and equipment together with a number of hired equipment.

“...the core project team is in place and key equipment is being made ready for early deployment to the project,” NRW Executive General Manager of Civil and Mining Business Ric Buratto said.

NRW is set to commence work at South Flank in September 2018.

In June of this year, BHP has also awarded a $260 million construction contract to CPB Contractors for works at South Flank’s Mining Area C precinct.

The entire South Flank project is expected to create more than 3,000 jobs for the region.
