More works are set to get underway at the Iron Bridge Magnetite Project in Western Australia with a new bulk earthworks contract - valued at approximately $70 million - awarded to NRW.

Under this contract, NRW will deliver bulk earthworks as well as drainage for roads, processing plant and infrastructure for the mine development.

“NRW is pleased to be involved in this exciting new project with Fortescue and looks forward to its successful execution,” NRW CEO and Managing Director Jules Pemberton said.

An estimate of 200 workers are expected to be on site during peak construction, with works anticipated to run for 45 weeks.

NRW has been approved to begin mobilising on site despite some outstanding contractual items that have to be finalised.

The $3.7 billion Iron Bridge Magnetite Project - located about 145 kilometres south of Port Hedland - is a joint venture between Fortescue Metals Group’s (FMG) subsidiary FMG Iron Bridge and Formosa Steel IB. The project was given the green light for development in April of last year and it is expected to create up to 3,000 jobs during construction and a further 900 jobs once operational.

The multi-billion dollar project will comprise of an ore processing facility with an annual capacity of 22 million wet metric tonnes; an airstrip and expanded village; a 195-kilometre water pipeline for Canning Basin; a 135-kilometre concrete pipeline linking to FMG’s Herb Elliot Port Facility and return process pipeline; a port handling facility, including concentrate dewatering, covered storage and reclaiming/conveying to existing outload circuits.

The first ore from the Iron Bridge Magnetite Project is expected in the first half of 2022.
