Following the issuance of the Letter of Intent back in June 2021, NRW Holdings has been formally awarded the contract for mining services at the Karara Iron Ore mine in Western Australia.
Scope of works under the $702 million five-year contract awarded by Karara Mining Limited will include load and haul, drill and blast as well as ROM re-handling along with the drill and blast component which is going to be handled by NRW’s wholly owned subsidiary, Action Drill & Blast Pty Ltd.
“I am delighted that NRW has now been formally awarded the contract and I look forward to a long and successful partnership with Karara Mining,” NRW Chief Executive Officer Jules Pemberton said.
Other works to be delivered under the contract include train loading and rehandling of product stockpiles with miscellaneous dayworks at the project site, and establishment of camp and access roads.
For these works, the company will require several key mining equipment including three 600-tonne excavators and a fleet of 220-tonne trucks, which are progressively being mobilised to the mining site for commissioning.
“NRW is an established West Australian based mining and civil contractor with extensive open cut mining experience gained through a number of successful mining operations in the state. Offering new prime equipment, NRW has the capability to undertake the entire Karara scope of work comprising of a broad range of mining, construction and engineering services. We look forward to commencement of mining services early next year,” Karara Chief Executive Officer Changjiang Zhu said in a statement released in December 2021.
Major works at the mine are anticipated to commence in March 2022 and NRW is estimating to have a workforce of 250 personnel to deliver the works.
The Karara Iron Ore mine is located approximately 200 kilometres south-east of Geraldton in the Shire of Perenjori. Karara is expected to have a 30+ year mine life and is comprised of a large open pit mine, a complex ore processing and beneficiation plant as well as significant infrastructure and logistics network.
