The much-needed upgrade on Picton Road in New South Wales is a step closer to becoming a reality with the announcement of a preferred option for the Picton Road and M31 Hume Highway interchange.
A Diverging Diamond Interchange is the chosen design for the interchange, which will help improve safety, reliability and efficiency for motorists.
“The Macarthur region is expanding in population faster than anywhere else across the State, which is why it is so important to have this road connection in place so families moving to the area can get to work and school.
“This innovative proposed design allows free flowing turns when exiting and entering Picton Road meaning fewer traffic light phases, making the interchange safer and more efficient for motorists,” Minister for Metropolitan Roads Natalie Ward said.
The interchange project is part of the broader Picton Road Upgrade between the Nepean River and M1 Princes Motorway – a major link between the Macarthur Region and Greater Sydney.
The State Government has committed $44 million over four years for the planning of the Picton Road Upgrade and the Australian Government has invested $95.6 million towards the planning of the upgrade as well as Picton bypass projects.
Over the last 12 months, the NSW Government has been developing a preferred option for the interchange as a response to community feedback that seeks improvements on Picton Road.
“Current and future residents of Wollondilly and surrounding region will soon have an intersection that will cut travel time and provide a safer route on to the Hume Motorway.
“We know there are delays, congestion, and frustration for those using the interchange which contributes to less reliable access to Picton Road. As our population continues to grow, we must be able to accommodate more traffic through the interchange,” Member for Wollondilly Nathaniel Smith MP said.
The timing of delivery as well as funding for the new Picton Road and M31 Hume Motorway interchange are yet to be confirmed.
The NSW Government is now seeking feedback on the preferred option for the new interchange. For those interested, you can provide your feedback or get more information on the Diverging Diamond Interchange through the Transport for NSW Picton Road Upgrade page.
