Another milestone has been reached on the transformative, multi-generational transport infrastructure project – Victoria’s Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) – as early works get underway in Monash.
Crews will be working night and day to move underground services, paving the way for the construction of the new underground station and twin tunnels for SRL East.
Relocation of gas, power and telecommunication services are being carried out on Normanby and Howleys roads – near Monash University – as well as on Ferntree Gully Road.
The project team will ensure disruptions are minimised as much as possible during the work by scheduling night works close to university student residences outside of exam times.
The new underground station at Monash will include a vibrant town centre and an interchange for bus services to help improve access to world-class education, health and research facilities while also helping the area realise its potential as a global medical research hub.
Suburban Rail Loop is being built in four sections, namely:
Construction on SRL East commenced in 2022 while SRL North and West are currently in the planning stages. Tunnelling works on SRL East is due to begin in 2026, with trains to begin taking passengers in 2035.
Recently, it was announced that the first tunnel boring machines to be used for SRL East tunnelling works will begin arriving on site in 2025.
SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill is anticipated to generate 8,000 direct jobs during its construction.
SRL Airport, on the other hand, is being delivered by Rail Projects Victoria and it is expected to be completed in 2029.
