Another milestone for WA's $428m new museum project

An agreement for Stage Two of  Western Australia’s $428 million new museum has been signed by the State and the project’s managing contractor, Multiplex, bringing the project another step closer to completion.

Works are also progressing well on the new museum with major construction already underway, which will support more than 3,000 jobs in the construction and creative industries.

“The new museum is on track to be one of the most exciting and innovative museums in the country. It will be a superb addition to WA’s tourism infrastructure.

“The State Government has committed close to $430 million for this project, which will create more than 3,000 jobs over the life of the project,” Premier Mark McGowan said.

WA’s new museum will feature:

• Seven major galleries that will share the stories of Western Australia, its people, its places and its relationship with the wider world
• A 1,000-SQM temporary exhibition gallery for home-grown and touring exhibitions
• Learning studios and programmable space for visitors and groups of all ages, including schools
• Retail, café and commercial spaces
• Activated public spaces both inside and outside the museum
• A spectacular display of the State’s famous blue whale skeleton

Once operational, the new museum is expected to attract approximately 800,000 visitors during its first year as well as contribute up to $31 million of extra tourism spend made from international visitors who are staying an extra night the region.

“The new museum will be a place where locals and visitors can truly experience the spirit of Western Australia.

“It will showcase the vast and ancient landscapes of Western Australia using state-of-the-art technology and innovative display methods. Most importantly, the incredible stories of our Stat will be shared through the voices of our people with a strong focus on Aboriginal and multicultural stories,” Culture and Arts Minister David Templeman said.

Construction on the new museum is expected to be completed mid-2019, with exhibition fit-out to be carried out the following year. The WA Museum is expected to open its doors to the public in 2020.
