New copper mine at Cloncurry will boost the economy for North West QLD

CuDeco’s $640 million Rocklands Copper Mine near Cloncurry in Queensland has officially opened and, according to Minister Assisting the Premier on North Queensland Coralee O’Rourke, the opening of the mine is good news for the economy as well as for the region.

The new Rocklands Copper Mine has created over 200 new jobs and hundreds of indirect jobs have also opened because of the regional economic spin-offs. With CuDeco's commitment to local employment, the mine has a high ratio of local workers. The company will also support the local Indigenous community through scholarships which is a part of its corporate social responsibility.

“Queensland’s North West Mineral Province is known around the world as a highly prospective region and the opening of Rocklands Copper mine demonstrates the area continues to have a great future ahead,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

Mrs O’Rourke said that the Queensland Government was also considering the recent recommendations by the North West Minerals Province Taskforce which will help boost the future exploration as well as production in the region.

“The opportunities for regional Queenslanders are evident – with Rocklands mine supporting jobs and putting accommodation in place to ensure the local community shares the flow-on economic benefits,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

According to Mrs O’Rourke, the Government is also committed to laying the foundations for a more sustainable economic development as well as growth in the resource sector of Queensland, enabling more projects to be developed.

“I am focused on driving economic development in this part of the State and creating jobs, which includes helping to grow this important sector.

“Through our Government’s Advancing North Queensland plan, I am working with my cabinet colleagues to find solutions in priority areas such as water, roads, trade and investment, which are vital to support the mining sector,” Mrs O’Rourke said.
