QCoal has awarded a new $480 million contract to CIMIC Group member, Thiess, to continue delivering mining services at the QCoal Northern Hub which is located in the Bowen Basin in Queensland.
“Thiess has a long-standing partnership with QCoal and the Thiess team has provided expert planning and optimum mine sequencing to deliver consistent outcomes for our client. This extension builds on our relationship with QCoal and enables us to drive greater efficiencies at the project,” CIMIC Group Chief Executive Officer Michael Wright said.
The QCoal Northern Hub comprises of four mines - Sonoma, Sonoma North, Drake and Jax - and Thiess will continue to deliver various mining services under their new four-year contract.
Thiess’ scope of works will include mine planning, blasting and drilling works as well as overburden removal and coal mining at the Northern Hub - which produces hard coking and thermal coal.
Thiess has been operating in the Collinsville region for more than two decades, with the company delivering works at the Collinsville Coal Mine from 1996 to 2013. The company has also been in operations at QCoal Northern Hub since 2007.

We also look forward to continuing our strong relationship with the Collinsville community with whom we have worked closely with for more than 20 years,” Thiess Managing Director Douglas Thompson said.
Works under the company’s new contract is set to commence in July 2018.
