The second South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute building (SAHMRI 2) marks a new milestone, with the release of the design for the development. This takes the project - which is part of Adelaide’s $3.6 billion BioMed precinct - one step closer to construction.
The SAHMRI 2 project is valued at $273 million and it is set to become the latest addition to the multi-billion dollar BioMed precinct, which is located in the north west corner of Adelaide’s CBD.
The medical precinct will be combining research, education, clinical care as well as business development.
The Woods Bagot-designed SAHMRI 2 will be positioned alongside the first SAHMRI, which was completed in 2013.
“The original SAHMRI was a catalyst in the resurrection of inner-city Adelaide, and the evolution of an internationally-regarded health and biomedical precinct.
“The design of SAHMRI 2 echoes the gravitas of this precinct where state of the art technology is part of the city’s ongoing transformation,” Woods Bagot Director Thomas Masullo said.

Once SAHMRI 2 is complete, it will be home to Australia’s first cancer treatment proton therapy unit that will deliver a technologically advanced cancer radiation therapy in the Southern Hemisphere.
“The vision for SAHMRI 2 is to provide flexible, intelligent and high-performance research and workspaces that connect people across teams, disciplines and generations,” Mr Masullo said.
The new medical building will have three frontages - one to North terrace and the city, the other to the nearby river, and the last one to Adelaide’s entertainment and convention precinct.
In 2017, the South Australian Government contributed approximately $44 million towards the project.
The development is projected to create up to 250 jobs during construction as well as 340 ongoing jobs once the new building is operational.
SAHMRI 2 is expected to be completed by 2021.
