Construction company Multiplex has announced that it has been appointed by the New South Wales Government to undertake the redevelopment of the iconic Sydney Fish Market at Blackwattle Bay.
“We are thrilled to be appointed to this iconic Sydney project and draw upon our extensive experience building submersed infrastructure. The redevelopment of the Sydney Fish Market is set to have a huge and positive impact on the local community as well as the fishing, construction and tourism industries and we couldn’t be more proud to help deliver this world-class development,” Multiplex Regional Managing Director NSW David Ghannoum said.
Construction on the new Sydney Fish Market is set to begin in 2021 and completed in 2024.
The new market – designed by 3XN along with BVN and Aspect Studios – is going to be built adjacent the existing Fish Market in Pyrmont.
The new Sydney Fish Market will feature over 6,000SQM of new public space across a four-storey market hall setting. The building will comprise of new restaurants, cafes, bars, fishmongers and specialty food retailers.
“The new Sydney Fish Market is set to become a world-class cultural icon for Sydney, creating jobs for the economy, boosting tourism and showcasing Sydney’s beautiful Blackwattle Bay,” Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said.
New public promenades, offices and commercial space as well as a ferry wharf will also be included in the development.
In addition, the project will deliver upgraded technology such as improved facilities to keep seafood fresher and enable for easier seafood trade.
The new open public spaces will allow shared pedestrian and cycle paths as well as waterfront access from Sydney Fish Market all the way to Woolloomooloo and provide improved access to nearby public transport links.
“The new market will be world class. Representing the very best traditions of the present market but utilising stunning design and architecture to house our operations – fishers, wholesalers, retailers and restaurants – in what will be an amazing experience for local, interstate and overseas visitors,” Sydney Fish Market CEO Greg Dyer said.
The building’s design shows a distinctive wave-shaped and scale-patterned roof that pays tribute to the fishing industry. The building also features a more accessible auction area to provide visitors a deeper understanding of the seafood supply chain.
While the new market is being built, the existing Sydney Fish Market will continue operating and trading without disruption.
This redevelopment is expected to support up to 700 jobs during construction and more than 700 on-going jobs once operational.
The redevelopment of Sydney Fish Market is just one of the many projects being fast tracked towards construction through the Government’s new Planning System Acceleration Program to help keep people in jobs and keep the economy moving through the COVID-19 pandemic.
