More works will soon commence on the $121.5 million Spoilbank Marina in Western Australia as the State Government appoints MGN Civil Pty Ltd as preferred tenderer to undertake bulk earthworks following a comprehensive tender evaluation by Pilbara Ports Authority.
The Stage 2 works is a significant milestone for the project as it means breaking ground within the marina for the first time.
The $10 million bulk earthworks package will involve the construction of the marina basin footprint as well as the installation of site perimeter fencing and establishment of ground levels.
The Pilbara economy will be benefitting from these works as MGN Civil is committed to sourcing approximately 75 per cent of plant hire requirements from Aboriginal businesses and about 80 per cent of goods and services from within the region.
“We are focused on supporting the regional Pilbara economy with local content and local jobs, and this package of works will deliver a substantial boost to local businesses and local workers,” Premier Mark McGowan said.
“I welcome the strong commitment to local and to Aboriginal businesses in this work package, which will create local jobs and support the Pilbara economy,” Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel said.
The entire Stage 2 of the project will be delivered in four different packages, with bulk earthworks as Package 2a.
The tender for Package 2b – which involves dredging and reclamation works – is now open for submissions on the Tenders WA website. On the other hand, the tender for Package 2c – involving breakwaters and revetments – is due to be released to market next week.
Works on Stage 1 of the Spoilbank Marina project – which includes the delivery of access roads to the site – is on track to be completed next month.
“Turning the sod on the road works was exciting, but now we will really start to see the marina footprint – and the Hedland community’s vision – take shape.
“The marina has been an aspiration of the Port Hedland community for decades: it will bring a welcome new amenity to the town,” Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan said.

Early works commenced in October 2020 and approximately 200 jobs are expected to be created over the project’s two-year construction period.
Spoilbank Marina is due to be completed by late 2022.
