The Victorian Government has opened the doors to a one-stop shop for jobseekers looking for opportunities on the $600 million Mernda Rail Extension project.

“The Mernda Rail Jobs Hub is about connecting jobseekers to employers, and finding opportunities for work on this exciting rail extension project.

“From crane operators to office administration – this project needs plenty of workers to build eight kilometres of new rail line and three new train stations. The Jobs Hub is truly a one-stop shop,” Minister for Industry and Employment Wade Noonan said.

The Mernda Rail Extension project is expected to create up to 1,200 direct jobs – approximately 600 during construction – as well as 1,800 indirect opportunities for local businesses and industries which support the project.

The project will also generate opportunities for at least 50 apprentices, trainees and engineering cadets under the State Government’s Major Projects Skills Guarantee (MPSG).

“We’re making a record investment in public transport – creating thousands of jobs including in the Mernda area and getting people home safer and sooner,” Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said.

Jobs Hub was built by Barpa – an indigenous construction company – and is aimed at helping jobseekers from different backgrounds to find employment.

Long-term unemployed Victorians as well as those with disability and workers who are transitioning from the auto industry will be given access to a network of employment service providers through Jobs Hub.

The Jobs Hub will offer face-to-face support, assistance with resume writing and job applications, training opportunities as well as connect jobseekers to suitable roles and employers.

Various positions will be available – from engineering and construction to administration and catering. The Mernda Rail Extension project team’s social procurement plan will be stimulating the local economy by purchasing goods locally as well as utilising local suppliers’ services.

“This new train line is desperately needed to support our growing community. Thanks to a dedicated Jobs Hub, we’ll get more Victorians into work, and get this project moving,” Member for Yan Yean Danielle Green said.

Jobs Hub is located at 323 McDonalds Road, Epping and will be open from 9am – 5pm, Monday to Friday and by appointment on Saturdays.
