Construction on the Carmichael mine and rail project in Queensland is pushing through amid the COVID-19 pandemic, with Adani Mining establishing strict measures for workers to help manage the risk of the virus.
“We’re following all advice from Queensland Health and the Federal Government and doing all we can to keep our people and the community safe.
“We have implemented measures including social distancing, health screening and increased hygiene, in the hope that more of our contractors, suppliers and the businesses who depend on us can also weather the storm, keeping their doors open, service running, and importantly provide certainty of employment,” Adani Mining CEO Lucas Dow said.
As works continue to progress, Adani has awarded a second contract – valued at $220 million – to Martinus Rail for the delivery of the Carmichael project’s rail component.
Under this new contract, Martinus Rail will build 86 kilometres of rail formation as well as a road over rail bridge, nine waterway bridges, over 200 culverts and 35 rail crossings.
“We are excited to continue our involvement with the Carmichael Project, which will provide new employment opportunities for regional Queenslanders.
“More than ever, it’s important to support local communities in regional areas at times like these,” Martinus Rail said on their LinkedIn.
Works under this contract is expected to support up to 600 jobs.
In addition, Martinus Rail will be basing their workforce out of Rockhampton and Townsville.
“At a time when our country is facing some of its toughest challenges, we’re determined to deliver on our commitments of jobs and opportunities,” Mr Dow said.
In October 2019, Martinus Rail was awarded a $100 million contract to deliver the rail link that will connect the Carmichael mine in Central Queensland to Abbot Point Port north of Bowen. You can read more about it here.
“We’re very pleased to extend our relationship with Martinus and look forward to the Rail project ramping up over the coming weeks and months,” Mr Dow said.
The Carmichael Rail Network is going to be about 200 kilometres long and will connect the mine to an existing rail network. The Carmichael mine is located approximately 300 kilometres from the coastline and 160 kilometres north-west of Clermont.
