Major works to build the new Hopkins Road bridge in Truganina, Victoria has commenced with a 65-tonne piling rig already onsite excavating bridge foundations on the north side of the rail line.
The piling rig will be digging 48 holes up to nine metres deep for the foundations of the new road bridge over the Melton Line.
The removal of the dangerous and congested level crossing at Hopkins Road will separate vehicles from trains, improving safety and travel reliability. A dedicated shared user path will also be provided to make journeys safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
The Hopkins Road level crossing will be gone for good and the new road bridge will open to traffic in 2026 – two years ahead of schedule – along with the level crossings at Exford, Coburns and Ferris roads in Melton.
A total of seven level crossings will be removed between the city and Melton and a new Melton Station will be built as part of a program of works to make the Melton Line level crossing-free by 2026.
