The New South Wales Government is committed to supporting local jobs and businesses through the delivery of the new Sydney Fish Market.
To date, approximately $300 million worth or 98 per cent of the project contracts have been awarded to local suppliers including SMC Marine, Traino/Hanson Australia and Active Steel – all playing a pivotal role in the construction of the new fish market.

We recognise the vital role that local businesses play in driving economic growth, and we are proud to announce to date more than $300 million has been awarded to local suppliers for the new Sydney Fish Market.
“By investing in local suppliers, we are enabling our business owners to thrive, innovate, and contribute to the growth of NSW. This investment will have a lasting impact on the local economy, as well as the wider community.
“The new Sydney Fish Market will provide a platform for local businesses to thrive, attracting international visitors and supporting the growth of our tourism and food sectors,” NSW Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper said.
Construction on the new Sydney Fish Market at Blackwattle Bay is progressing well with a massive concrete pour being carried out at the project site’s cofferdam, which will become the foundation of the facility’s watertight basement level.
The basement level – which is a unique feature of the building’s design – will require around 34,000 cubic metres of concrete, equivalent to about 14 Olympic swimming pools. The concrete used for this is a highly specialised and sustainable mix that will help reduce CO2 emissions and ensure durability.
Along with the concrete base, the hundreds of marine piles installed by SMC Marine will make up the foundation of the new Sydney Fish Market.
St Marys-based supplier Active Steel will be providing steel reinforcements for the concrete slabs. These steel reinforcements are made from 70 per cent recycled steel products sourced in Australia. With the basement surrounded by seawater, the foundations will need a high amount of reinforcement steel.
The new Sydney Fish Market, once complete, will revitalise Blackwattle Bay. It will provide a waterfront promenade as well as more than 6,000-SQM of public open space while improving pedestrian and cycling links.
The new fish market will feature a variety of fishmongers, cafes, bars and specialty food retailers in a market hall setting.
The project is expected to create over 700 jobs during its construction and support a further 700 once the new fish market is operational.
Multiplex was awarded the contract to build the new Sydney Fish Market in 2020.
