The contract to deliver Stage 2 of the $615 million Gawler Rail Electrification project in South Australia has been awarded to Lendlease, which follows the signing off on the project by the Australian and State Governments.
Stage 2 of the project will complete the full electrification of the Gawler Rail Line, and works will include:
“We look forward to contributing our rail expertise to modernise Adelaide’s rail network, ultimately delivering a better passenger experience on the city’s busiest rail line.
“We have a long history working in South Australia and this project will allow us to further extend our support of local workers and local industry through initiatives such as our NorthHub employment and training facility,” Lendlease CEO Engineering and Services Craig Laslett said.
Works on Stage 2 is set to commence early in 2019, with the entire Gawler Rail Electrification project completed by late 2020. This stage is also expected to generate up to 135 jobs a year during the delivery phase.
Once the project is completed, the electrified line will be able to provide increased capacity along one of Adelaide’s busiest rail lines as well as provide commuters using the train with faster, cleaner and more reliable services.
Earlier this year, Lendlease was also awarded the contract for Stage 1 of the Gawler Rail Electrification that will electrify the rail line between Adelaide and Salisbury.
The $615 million Gawler Rail Electrification is jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian Governments, with each contributing $220 million and $395 million respectively.
