Albemarle Lithium is ramping up construction on the $1 billion Kemerton lithium project in Western Australia as the company awards a new contract for the delivery of infrastructure to Kerman Contracting.
Kerman Contracting is going to carry out the works in two separate portions. The first part will involve the design and construction of the Pyromet buildings, including the spodumene storage building, acidfield ore handling building and tailings building.
The second portion of works will include the delivery of the sodium sulphate packaging and storage warehouse, sodium sulphate pallet storage building, lithium hydroxide packaging and storage warehouse, lithium hydroxide pallet storage building, and the boiler and air compressor buildings.
“We are excited about being part of yet another project in the Lithium market,” Kerman Contracting Managing Director Chris Kerman said.
The Kemerton lithium hydroxide plant is being built on a 89-hectare site located within the Kemerton Strategic industrial Area, approximately 160 kilometres south of Perth and 17 kilometres north east of Bunbury.
Once constructed, the plant will process spodumene ore from the nearby Talison Lithium Greenbushes mine and will have an initial capacity of 60,000 to 75,000 metric tonnes - which is expandable to up to 100,000 tonnes over time.
This billion dollar project is anticipated to generate 1,000 local jobs - 500 during construction and 500 once operational.
Major construction on the Kemerton plant commenced earlier this year and it is due for commissioning in 2021.
