Works to expand two hospitals in Queensland are a step closer following the appointment of John Holland to undertake the two major hospital expansion projects.
The Logan Hospital Stage 2 Expansion and the Princess Alexandra Hospital Expansion are the first two major expansion projects in the Queensland Health and Hospital Plan to have construction contracts awarded.
Over the next 14 months, John Holland will carry out detailed design for the two projects using a managing contractor model. The company must deliver a value for money guaranteed construction price prior to commencing major works on both expansion projects.
“John Holland is proud to build on its strong partnership with the Queensland Government to expand two of Brisbane’s largest and relied-upon hospitals – the Logan and Princess Alexandra Hospitals.
“We are already delivering Stage 1 of the Logan Hospital expansion, and now we will leverage our experience and capabilities into Stage 2 alongside the new project of the PA Hospital expansion.
“We know how important modern health facilities are to local communities – and being involved in large-scale healthcare project such as these pit out purpose of transforming lives into practice,” John Holland Executive General Manager – Building David Lehmann said.
The cornerstone of the Queensland Health and Hospitals Plan is a $9.78 billion investment to build three new hospitals along with 11 hospital expansions and the delivery of a state-of-the-art Queensland Cancer Centre.
Earlier this year, the State Government announced that it has shortlisted 12 construction companies to deliver about $8 billion of capital works under the Plan. You can read more about it here.
“I’m proud the Palaszczuk Government is delivering the nation’s largest health capital program that will ensure Queenslanders will have access to modern, world-class health care for decades to come.
“We’re creating new facilities, thousands of hospital beds, thousands of construction jobs and thousands of health jobs,” Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Yvette D’Ath said.
The $530 million Logan Hospital Stage 2 Expansion project will deliver 112 additional beds, building on the $460 million Stage 1 expansion that will provide 206 additional beds – which is currently being delivered by John Holland as well.
The investment in the second stage of the expansion along with Stage 1 and several other infrastructure projects takes the total commitment by the Queensland Government in expanding the Logan Hospital to more than $1 billion.
On the other hand, the $350 million investment to expand the Princess Alexandra Hospital will deliver 249 additional beds through refurbishments and the construction of new spaces above the existing Emergency Department.
This expansion project will provide more intensive care beds and more high dependency beds, bringing greater access to acute care and intensive care services.
“Today’s announcement is a real win for existing locals and the families who will eventually call the region home in the years to come.
“The 361 new beds being delivered as part of these two expansions are just some of the 3,378 additional beds being delivered across Queensland.
“John Holland has been a key partner in the delivery of large health capital infrastructure projects since 2018, and already has a track record with Logan Stage 1,” Minister D’Ath said.
The Logan Hospital Stage 2 Expansion is expected to generate up to 1,290 construction jobs while the Princess Alexandra Hospital Expansion is set to create 854 jobs during its construction.
The two expansion projects are anticipated to be completed in the second half of 2026.
